Course Descriptions:
Foundations of Science:
The Foundations of Science course will aim to give a student the basic understanding of the world through three topics: biology, chemistry, and physics. These three topics are aspects of science not three sciences at apart, for each science completes the other.
Through the study of everyday activities, such as walking watching television, the students will explore the three aspects of that activity in a given situation. Students will also understand the science of soccer, to understand the sport in more than one perspective. When we walk, we are not only doing it physically or biologically or chemically only, but the three altogether and that is what we want the students to learn. Through fun, interesting, and interactive labs and experiments, that will not require them to memorize, but only to understand and enjoy.
History:
This course is aimed to have Curve it! students develop a love of history. The course hopes to break the students away from the popular view of history. The common misconception of history is that it is a number of dates and facts one must memorize which have no use other than to prepare the students for the large amount of memorization they will have for the Tawjihi exam. The course will approach history from a different perspective than most public schools in Jordan. The students will begin by examining their personal history, and the importance of their past and how it helped shape their lives today. The course will then shift to a broader view, and the students will tackle recent history, hoping to have the students realize the importance of history to the world they live in. The course then links the two: personal and world history. This will be done by studying poems, literature, and artworks from individuals from different time periods. By relating the history to the individual, the students should have, if not a love, then an understanding of the importance of history to the individual, when they return to their respective schools.
Philosophy:
Although the study of philosophy deals with every aspect of life, a philosophy course is rarely offered at schools. Curve It! realizes the importance of philosophy as the study of who we are, and thus a philosophy course is vital to the Curve It! experience. In philosophy course, we aim to teach students about different schools of thoughts, tracing the thoughts of the Greeks to modern-day Big Bang theory. The course focuses specially on moral philosophy, taking philosophical opinions and applying them to real life situations. Many texts will be read, including but not limited to Sophie’s World, which has proven perfect for children and teenagers.
